Online Gambling Addiction
Online Gambling is an activity where individuals place wagers and play games of chance through Internet-enabled devices such as computers, smart phones, tablets or digital television. This type of gambling is distinct from in-person casino gambling or placing bets over the telephone and is becoming increasingly common as technology advances.
Many factors contribute to a person’s risk for developing a gambling addiction, including personality traits, environmental influences, and a genetic predisposition. A 2017 study titled, “Genetic and environmental influences on gambling: a meta-analysis of twin studies” found that genetic factors are moderately heritable, meaning that inherited characteristics account for half the variance in gambling behaviors.
People who develop a gambling addiction often neglect their everyday responsibilities in favor of their online gambling habits. They may begin to miss school or work obligations, skip social events, and lose track of their personal finances. This behavior is a warning sign that it’s time to seek help.
Another factor contributing to gambling addiction is the allure of financial gain. It is easy to lose large sums of money through online gambling, which can lead to financial ruin and emotional distress. Continuing to gamble after losing money can also lead to the dangerous behavior known as “chasing losses,” where individuals attempt to win back the lost money by betting more, resulting in bigger losses and a never-ending cycle of debt and emotional distress.
Individuals who are at risk for developing a gambling addiction can take steps to prevent this behavior by setting boundaries and limits on their online gambling activities. They can also identify their triggers — things or situations that make them want to gamble excessively – and find healthy alternatives that provide the same sense of relaxation, entertainment, and fulfillment without negative consequences.
